Ballad Shredding

“Wait. Keep playing that,” I said as I picked up my guitar. I suddenly had a spark of inspiration. It was a beautiful chord progression and seemed like something that would be cool to solo over. I started with a slow melody that fit pretty well. Rose kept playing the chords and I slowly transitioned to playing fast. For a minute, I forgot about the world around me as I let the notes pour out.
Before I knew it, I was in the middle of the most self indulgent soloing I’d ever done. Part of me wondered if I was getting a little carried away. Was I taking it way too far? But this time, I ignored that part of my mind and just went for it. I guess it turned out to be a good thing, because when we were done everyone seemed to be impressed.
“That was some nice ballad shredding there,” said Tim with an unexpected compliment.
“Ballad shredding?”
“Yeah. That’s what I call it anyway. Ballad shredding is like when you’re totally shredding over some really slow ballad type song. You know, like how Jimmy Page plays on ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’.”
“The live version,” said Rose.
“Right,” said Tim. “Jimmy’s the master of ballad shredding.”
