Cliff Burton - For Whom The Bell Tolls
Just then we were interrupted by Mick on the bass. The volume was turned up and he was totally jamming out. This time it was with full distortion.
Our jaws dropped when he started playing super fast, way up high on the neck. He was jamming in a style that was usually reserved for 6-strings, not bass guitars.
He came to a pause and I looked over at his setup. “Dude, you got a distortion pedal?”
“Yeah dude. I got it the other day. I’ve been wanting to get one ever since seeing Cliff Burton. Remember Day On The Green?”
“How could I forget?”
“Well, ever since then, I had to have one. Plus, now we can do this song.”
He started playing the opening riff of “For Whom The Bell Tolls”.
It was funny, because I used to always think that part was played on guitar. But after seeing them live, I realized it was way cooler on bass.
“I love this song,” said Rose. “We should do it.”
I knew she was right. In my mind, it was the perfect song. Especially with those chromatic riffs. They sounded killer to my ears.
