The Real Deal

Walking back from lunch we heard some blues guitar playing coming from a garage.
“You gotta hear this guy,” said Tim. “He’s the real deal.”
“Hey Leon,” said Tim as we got a little closer. "Mind if we listen?"
"Come on in!" he said.

Leon was an older dude who reminded me of BB King. Partly because he looked just like him. Also, he played a really cool hollow bodied Gibson guitar. Sometimes I'd see him jamming out in his garage when I was walking by. Or sometimes he’d be kicking back with his buddies.

Tim knew him pretty well because he lived a few houses away.
When I listened to him play I realized how much I paled in comparison. I mean, I guess I was good in my own way. I knew how to play cool things and I could play them fast and heavy. The way I played fit the songs we did. But Leon’s playing oozed with coolness and style. It was very soulful. I made a mental note to work on that aspect of my playing. I knew it was in me somewhere. I just needed to find it, and then let it out.
